A day in the life
Parents/Carers will often wonder what their child gets up to at school and especially in their 1st year in primary school!
Many parents/ carers collect their child and ask them what did you do today? / how was your day? and they will often get replies like 'it was good or I can't remember or I played'
So below is a little insight, for you, of your child's day

8.45-9am
I get dropped off outside my classroom where I will say goodbye.
Independence is an important skill, so my teachers will encourage me to say goodbye, find my name for self registration and come into class to hang up my belongings on my peg.
We settle down for morning activities while waiting for my friends to arrive and then we each vote for our end of the day story and then take the register.

9am
Phonics
is the first subject that is taught. My friends and I are ready to focus and ready to learn new sounds to help me to read and write.
We follow the Little Wandle scheme and you can find more information on the link below
https://www.athelneyprimary.org.uk/little-wandle-letters-and-sounds-phonics-1/
PUNCUALITY is very important to ensure I do not miss out on important learning here, so please parents/carers try your best to get me to school on time!

9.30am
Free Learning
Learning through play is important part of of my reception day. My classroom is designed to be accessible, engaging and fun for me to play, explore, and experiment independently, with my peers or with my teachers. There is a mixture of child led learning, adult guided learning and enhanced provision opportunities which will be linked to our learning for that week. We have a free flowing snack table which may have fruit, vegetables, bagels, cereal etc.. where I can help myself and learn to be independent.

11-11.30am
Maths
It is important part of everyday life. I will be taught mathematical skills and knowledge through NCTEM where we use Numberblocks to help me understand Number concepts. I will also learn Shape, Space and Measure through songs and hands on activities too. Once I learn these skills, I will have the opportunity to apply them throughout the day in continuous and enhanced provision.

11.45- 12.45pm
Lunch Time
I will go to the toilet and wash my hands before going to the lunch hall at 11.45
I will be encouraged to pick up a tray, cutlery and choose my option of food at the counter and use my manners e.g. pasta please. Our menu is on a 3 week rota and you can find an example of the menu for September on Transitioning to Reception Subheading.
After we finish our lunch we get to go outside to the big playground!

12.45- 1.15pm
Register and Literacy Story Time
Our literacy story time is linked to Understanding of the world topic. I will listen to the story as my teacher will ask me questions and get us to join in repeated refrains. We may do writing linked to this book too. I can enjoy listening to the story at home with my parents/carers by going on the moon class webpage where my teacher has posted the story and may give me ideas on what I can do at home.
1.15-2.30pm
Free Learning

2.45-3.15pm
Home Time
I will have an end of the day story - this will be the story that won the most votes in the morning. Then I will collect my belongings and wait patiently on my carpet space for my teacher to call me when my parent/carer has arrived outside my classroom.
Please try and be on time to collect me ![]()
Hopefully that shows you a lot about what I get up to at school so then you can ask me some targeted questions and hopefully I will give you more than 'It was good, I played or I can't remember?
Some questions you could ask me:
What sound did you learn today?
What book won the vote? Did you vote for that one?
Who did you play with? What did you do in your free learning time- what activities did you do?
What did you eat at lunch?
