Success for today; prepared for tomorrow. Nothing is beyond our reach.

Discovery Class

Discovery... Class of 2016!

Hello and welcome to the Discovery Class page!

Firstly I wanted to say what a fantastic start to our new academic year it has been and thank you to you all; parents, staff and, of course, our lovely children - for working together to make it a real corker of a year so far!

Why has it been so great?  Well, first we were very pleased to welcome the Discovery Class newbies; our Year 4 dazzling duo - Zoe and Rafael, who have joined from Atlantis, and Kain and Tyler our fabulous Year 5s, who are not only new to Discovery but new to Athelney too.  They have all made a great start.  This was helped by the warm welcome they received from the Discovery originals - Ugo, Safi, Joshua, Zachary and Ronny - who did a fabulous job of showing them the ropes and making them feel part of the team:  Thanks guys!!

The topic for our first half term was - 'Me and my Friends'.  This topic helped us to get to know each other and included lots of games, activities and trips to improve our team-ness, as it were.  Take a look at these fab pics!

Me and my friends

The children are supported this year by the crème-de-la crème of teaching staff - The wonderful Tania Crayden, or class HLTA, the fantabulous Julia, the incredible Sandra Massheder and the top banana Lucy Johns.

This Term our topic has changed to 'the Magic of Toys'!  Play is an incredibly important and sometimes forgotten part of primary school education; this half term we will be learning more about playing and how to do 'good play', read stories involving toys, visit a toy museum and toy shop, make our own pneumatic toys, and of course participate in lots of structured and unstructured (!) play!

In science this half term we are investigating 'Sound' and, amongst other things, we will be answering the children's questions, which have so far included 'Can a voice really smash glass?' and 'What is the loudest ever sound?'.  We will also be using dataloggers to record decibels and do investigations.

As a school, we are working on developing our growth mindset.  Having a growth mindset enables us to build resilience and be open-minded when approaching our learning.  It also helps us to embrace mistakes and use them as learning points.

Here's some useful information:

Our PE day is Monday - please ensure your child brings their PE kit on this day.

Our swim day is Friday - please ensure your child brings their swim kit on this day.

Homework goes out on (most) Fridays and is due back Wednesday - children who bring homework in will be celebrated.

I am very much looking forward to working with you all to ensure that we provide an enjoyable and outstanding level education for your children as we approach (sshhhhh) Christmas!
