The digraphs 'er',‘ir’ and ‘ur’. 'er' is often found at the end of a word, 'ir' and 'ur' are often found in the middle of words (occasionally at the beginning of words). Whilst ‘er’ is the most common spelling for the /er/ sound at the end of the word, there are exceptions. E.g. blur, fur, sir, fir, stir. The /ir/ sound spelt ‘ir’ is the least common spelling for this sound.

Adding s and es to words (plurals). If the ending sounds like /s/ or /z/, it is spelled as –s. If it forms an extra syllable, then it is spelled as –es.

The /s/ sound is usually spelled with a double s in words that only have one syllable.  Clap each word and see how many syllables each word in the list has, you should notice that the words are single syllable.
